Step-by-Step: How to Properly Sign Your Title in Pennsylvania

Step 1: Where To sign

You need to have this title notarized. Make sure to sign the title in the presence of a Notary Public.

On the back of the title, look for the section labeled “SIGNATURE OF SELLER” and sign there.

Where it says “SELLER AND/OR CO-SELLER MUST HANDPRINT NAME HERE” on the back of the title, please print the name(s) as required.

Step 2: Sign the Title

Use your legal name as it appears on the title when signing. If the title of the front page has two owners listed, both must sign it. There’s no need to fill out the Buyer section—just leave that part empty.

Step 3: Lien Release

When a vehicle’s title indicates a lien, it is essential to provide the purchaser with a Lien Release document issued by the lienholder, confirming the loan has been fully repaid. This document, along with the vehicle’s title, is required by the buyer to transfer the vehicle’s ownership into their name, as per the guidelines set by the Pennsylvania government.

Without the Lien Release, the buyer cannot complete the ownership transfer process, which could lead to legal complications and delays. Ensuring that all necessary documents are in order not only facilitates a smooth transaction but also builds trust between the buyer and the seller. It’s important to note that the Lien Release document must be an official form from the lienholder, explicitly stating that the lien has been satisfied and the lienholder has no further claim on the vehicle. Following these steps carefully ensures compliance with state regulations and prevents potential issues during the title transfer process.

Duplicate Title

To obtain a replacement title through the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), adhere to the following procedures:

  • Fill out an Application for Duplicate Title (Form MV-380).
  • For lienholders who need to request a duplicate title or make changes to an existing title, please complete form MV-38L
  • Submit the completed form to your nearest Pennsylvania DMV office.
  • Pay the required fee of $53. Upon successful submission and payment, you can expect to receive the replacement title via mail within approximately 3 weeks.
